ZHEGAO 958016 City of Steam Steampunk Train

Zhegao’s Steampunk Train offers a departure from the brand’s usual mini-bricks, providing a standard-sized 1,958-piece build. Measuring 69.2cm in length, the set captures the sprawling "Retro-Future" aesthetic through a technical frame and a large-scale locomotive design.
However, the experience is hampered by quality control issues. Part distribution across bags was inconsistent, and some stickers were pre-applied across multiple bricks, contradicting the manual. While the final model is visually impressive, the lack of minifigures, lighting, or printed parts—combined with minor structural fragility—makes it a better display piece than a play set.

△The cover art style isn’t traditionally steampunk, but it doesn’t stop the locomotive from exuding a mechanical vibe that pops off the screen.

△The assembly process for the train is incredibly fun! The details are made up of many structures you wouldn’t expect, relatively complex but very stable. The interactions between the parts are tightly integrated, with a very high level of craftsmanship. However, because the average fit of the pieces is quite tight, and there aren’t many limitations in the design, the difficulty of assembly is high.

△It looks like not much has been assembled, but in fact, it’s made up of a lot of small details.

△By the third bag, I was truly amazed! This part’s structure is incredible, with mechanical details everywhere, each area made up of various different types of pieces—so satisfying to assemble!

△The front of the locomotive is completed, and it looks like a work of art… it’s perfect…

△Next comes the complex bottom part of the train… how did the designer come up with this? The stability and detail are all extraordinarily well-thought-out, brilliant design!

△When I reached the final bag, I felt like my thoughts, which had already flown out of the solar system, were suddenly pulled back to Earth by the bizarre track design… What’s up with this completely mismatched track? Is it trying to force in a flaw just because the train part is too perfect? I really don’t get it…

△Though the train and track are closely related, on this product, I would honestly prefer if it didn’t have tracks at all… The nearly perfect train part paired with tracks resembling those from the American Old West creates a severe disconnect. It’s like Batman, decked out in high-tech gear, wearing shiny glass slippers in size 44—a perfect mismatch in both appearance and functionality…

△But the performance of the train part is absolutely top-notch! I’ll just pretend the tracks don’t exist…

△If the set had come with a Western-themed train instead of a steampunk one, the tracks would’ve perfectly complemented the design.

△So, I’ll focus on the locomotive! The transparent shell shows off the mechanical structure in a slightly hidden way, and with the various tubes, gears, and more, it’s extremely well done.

△The stickers are also perfectly done, enhancing the details without overpowering the design—making for a powerful combination!

△The train wheels are all functional, but no connected mechanisms were included. If I were to nitpick, if the mechanical components moved while the train was in motion, I’d definitely call it the pinnacle of steampunk trains.
